If anyone is interested in it's progress well here I go. Hope this turns out ok.
Here's the first concept design drawing. The modified thumbnail pattern will be around the slots just like the back.
Well at least that's the plan for now.

Like the design it has the ionic vln scroll, moorish architecture headstock outline and traditional european themes in the carving . I would call it potpourri , a liitle bit of everything.

Got about 12hrs carving in to this stage.

Keep us posted chris great work. .Is that BRW on headstock?? are you using regular carving chisels or mini carving tools?

So far I've pretty much used the tools in the picture below and the homemade marking gage/compass that fits in the slots and uses a blade from my flycutter.
Knives, #11/ 3mm,2mm,.5mm gouges, #6/3mm gouge and checkering tools. And a couple of other chisels and gouges here and there. I have a set of mini chisels you can see but not those micro chisels. I also have the 400k rpm pneumatic drill that I use for stippling and maybe some fine corrections but I'm trying not to use it for now for anything else.

Wow! That is serious artistry. Incredibly impressive.
I found shaping a Danelectro "coke bottle" style headstock hard enough!

Got some design and layout work done today. Used a white transfer paper that i bought at the fabric store to transfer the design. It's a little ruff and will be cleaned up when carving but it's close enough.

Did some more ruffing in. Canned the white transfer paper method and went back to gluing on the paper drawing and cutting in the lines with a knife and some chisels.
Time for a beer...

Yeah , I think I have something passed down in my genes from my father. Still lots to learn and do.

Stippling is done with a 400k pneumatic drill and carbide ball mill.

OK, I'm calling it ruffed in. Now it's time to do some shaping and refinements.
The tight grain of ebony helps too. It also will polish up to a shine with micro mesh. Once the finish goes on it helps to even up the color. It seems to me that with this type of carving a lot has to do with how it reflects light.
